One of our customer’s all time favorite fabrics is back…even though we were told by the fabric supplier that it was discontinued years ago! We’re not sure how we got our hands on it, but say “hello” (or “welcome back”) to hemp organic cotton wool. I (Lily) am the founder, designer, and manager here at Eli & Barry and I am sensitive to wool. I have to be choosy about wool sweaters because I find most very itchy. This fabric doesn’t give me issues and I find it cozy, but also structural which gives these garments such a nice shape.

Like many of my pieces, this dress has been years in the making. I was lucky enough to visit Georgia O’Keefe’s home in Abiquiu, New Mexico in 2019. Like many people, I was so inspired by her home and her life.O’Keefe’s style of dress was also quite sculptural and simple. Not to be presumptuous, but I can see O’Keefe wearing this dress quite clearly in my mind’s eye.

I imagine this dress layered up for winter dressing: think a hand knit sweater (the older, the better), a bunchy scarf, warm wool tights and ankle boots.

And, guess what? You can wash and dry all of our clothing, including these pieces. We pre-washed and dried all of the fabric before sewing so don’t be afraid to throw this in the dryer. It’s a lot of extra work that some brands don’t do, but we want our clothing to work in your real life. I don't know about you, but if I can’t wash and dry something at home, it’s not going to work for me.

I recommend around 12” of “ease” or space between your bust measurement and about 20” of ease in the hips give or take a few inches here and there. As always, you can e-mail me with any questions.
